Another thought on job security:
There’s no “safer” choice. Being a freelancer, a CEO or having a pub on the beach won’t bring you stability.
Independence does not mean security.
The thing to focus on is awareness. Being aware of your context and the way it changes is your safest option.
This is hard for many successful people. The idea of continuous effort once we “we’ve made it” is not very appealing. We expect to reach some utopic point in life where we can kick back and relax. That doesn’t exist.
Look at Warren Buffet, the guy keeps investing. I’m sure he enjoys it, but also does it because he understands that you’re never done.
There’s nothing that bad luck and a change of context can’t take away from you.
Work your ass off, and be constantly aware. That’s your best bet.
And it’s still a bet.

I’m trying to write a comment that adds value to this amazing post. But I can’t seem to. You’ve said it all perfectly.
Be aware, always. Shit happens.
Ha! I think you’ve perfectly explained how it’s possible for celebrities or head honchos to suddenly go bankrupt after being millionaires.
Things don’t stop. We don’t get to stop and that’s why it’s even more imperative to find something you can at least tolerate.
Work your ass off, yes. But, be smart, more so. Plan for that relaxation, because the things we receive through hard work disappear faster than the time it took to earn them.
Bankrupcy, suicide, depression, you name it. Money is no insurance.
Things leave you faster than they come, good point my italian friend.
Carlos – This is the primary reason I’m in a state of perpetual job search. It’s not that I don’t enjoy what I do, it’s just that I -always- want to have a contingency plan in place in case something goes wrong. Also, I’m always on the look out for the next big thing so I can keep growing both in knowledge (from incredible people and companies), and in different types of experience. I want to be really versatile as I grow.
Companies that understand this and accommodate me accordingly will get to keep me longer, that’s not arrogance, it’s reality. I’ve got -nothing- to lose right now. That will invariably change, but for now, I’m being selfish. Really loved this post!

I’m with you Ryan. You’ve sparked a post, thank you very much
I liked your take on this security topic, nice read. I also really agreed with Ryan’s comment right above me here… I don’t overtly look for jobs but I’m definitely ready to make a move whenever. If you’re confident about your contributions and ability to add value somewhere, there’s no reason to be bashful about it. Plus following up different opportunities in different types of jobs only grows your base of knowledge and teaches you new things, which in turn makes you better at whatever it is you do.
