The Flock

1042832280_2c1d1cb941There’s something amazing going on:

Remarkables are getting together.

You won’t see the results until it’s too late, but they are coming.

Ambitious nobodies wanting to thrive are finding each other. They realize that they can do it as a group. They are committing early.

Selfish reasons, honorable reasons, it doesn’t matter. They are understanding that cooperation is a must. So they cooperate.

It has nothing to do with age or previous achievements. It’s all about starting together.

They take off, and another group follows later the same pattern.

Without people realizing it, without making a huge buzz, they are flying away.

Ten years from now, where will they be?

The Flock is uniting. You want to fly with them.

I think what stops people from joining the flock – or collaborating – is another ‘c’ word: competition.

We’re taught to compete first and foremost.

I see this in the nonprofit world every day. People are unlikely to collaborate because they can’t imagine collaborating with a competitor.

When people realize it’s not about getting their piece of the pie and instead it’s about making the pie bigger, then we’ll get stuff done.

Great point Sam. Non-profits sure have some contradictions.

There’s nothing that gets me more energized than being in a group of people talking about big ideas and how to make them happen. That’s what I found in my business partner. The great thing is about ‘flocking together’ is that each of us has our own strengths we bring to the table. Maybe that’s where the real power comes from – not the brainstorming of big ideas, but the ability to actually carry them out.

Execution is all that matters. I’m worried that we may have a lot of ideas and little execution. Is it possible that previous generations were better at it? Would have to think about that…

I’m not sure that previous generations were better. Maybe they had less to distract them? Without 500 cable channels, 200 million blogs and anything else to distract you, you can get a lot done.

Or, maybe they had a better commitment to their vision. They rolled up their sleeves and saw to it that they completed what they set out to do.

What separates the wheat from the chaff then, today, is perhaps the ability to not just have an idea, but to bring it to reality.
