I think Tim Ferris talked about something like this in his book "The 4 Hour Workweek" which I did find useful maily for the couple pointers on productivity. He had two specific pointers of interest to me. irst, the 80/20 principle or pareto principle which I'm sure you're probably familiar with and limiting the amount of time you spend on tasks. It's almost like a human law that whenever our time is scarce, or anything for that matter we treat it more seriously, more preciously. Steve Pavlina mentioned the same thing and how important it is to set time deadlines for goals. He mentioned in one of his blogs how he had limited his work time to increase his productivity because when he had set aside a large amount of time for his tasks he unconsciously felt that he had more time than he needed and spent less time performing actual work.

I personally set high expectations for my goals that act more like deadlines, because of the way deadlines sort of act on me, they force my productivity if that makes any sense.

Rest and play when planned are ok. Rest and play when circumstances force you to it, are also ok. Rest and play because you didn't plan anything else, it's not.

Also, many things can be relaxing and productive at the same time (e.g.: reading a book (great for waiting for an appointment))

The idea that it is only ok to relax when it has been pre-planned is an idea that I think will lead our generation to early breakdowns. Productive is important but so is rest and play. You know what they say about Jack being a dull boy.

I think it is an importnat force for balance to know how to take advantage of snippets of time to relax throughout the day. As opposed to being frustrated that you are stuck in traffic, waiting for an appointment etc why not relax, take a few deep breaths, let go, listen to some music, flip through a magazine?

As long as it's planned, relaxing is always a good decision.

Like I told Grace above, I think you have a point. When we need more time, we are very productive. When we have enough, we suck at it. I can't help to wonder why though...

I think that David has a point there too. We seem to do better when we don't have enough time. I will think about this more, it's funny that we behave like that...

This weekend was my girlfriend and my two year anniversary. I took her to a spa where we got the chance to relax and massage the stress away.

I felt something strange while sitting in the sauna that I feel I will write a blog post about later. Usually I get frustrated and antsy when I'm sitting around doing nothing. However, I planned ahead of time to allow myself this time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment.

Because I planned this time to relax, I actually felt like I could. Planning to leave time unplanned is actually a great way for an A-type to relax and take a deep breath.

My girlfriend was happy and I was actually happy too. I think I'll schedule some more relaxation time for myself.

I wondered that before too. I think that it won't happen because it'd cost too much money, The sad things is that I'm pretty sure that' the ONLY obstacle.

I've recently made a discovery about how I deal with time. I had a couple weeks off, in between jobs, and in those two weeks, made a point to relax. There were a couple things I had to do, but because I had all the time in the world, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Now as I start working again, I'll again start to wish there were more hours in the day. I'll get a lot more done though. It's kind of an all or nothing thing, where I'm getting a hundred things done or I'm getting nothing done, which kind of sucks.

Good thoughts! I like that you mention acknowledging that time is scarce but still being productive. Looking time "right in the face" can be a powerful step towards working hard and instead of trying to deny or procrastinate, just run right with it. I always work well under pressure!
