Worrisome Needs

Random thoughts on needs of our generation:

- Need for new: This applies not only to material stuff, but also to our day to day life. Telling someone that you have “no news” can feel like having “no life”. (Sparked by Jamie Varon)

- Need for drama: Our constant desire for more and better implies that we may be constantly unhappy with what we have. We always have something to complain about. I also blame the media for this. Many shows have made drama as something “cool”.

- Need for productivity: Yes, being productive is a good thing. But, the competition can be a burden instead of a challenge for many.

- Need for exposure: People are becoming personality strippers online, not realizing that wrong moves nowadays can haunt them for the rest of their lives. Seen from the outside, it’s easy to relate openness with weakness (even if it’s not always accurate).

- Need for delusion: We embrace segmented visions of the world that support our previous thoughts. We fail (and resist) to see things from a wider angle. This creates our own personal movie, where we force ourselves to believe that life’s rules match our desires.

I may be wrong on all these, they are just meant to spark thinking.

“Yes, being productive is a good thing. But, the competition can be a burden instead of a challenge for many.”

You said it perfectly.

Hi Carlos,

In all I think you’ve done a great job in distilling the needs into thought sparks, one thing I’d like to just bring up is the distinction between needs and wants, it gets tricky but I think it’s an important distinction to be made. I did my best to find that distinction in some of your wording, as well as building on some ideas here at my own blog. Thanks again for the inspiration.

I was just talking to someone about the need for drama in people’s lives recently. It was girlfriend’s who keep these idiot guys around that obviously are not what they are looking for. Rather than just being straight with Mr. Suitor and letting everyone go on to much merrier and happier pastures they prolong the entire process THAT THEY THEN COMPLAIN THEY DON’T WANT TO BE IN!

I blame Dawson’s Creek….frickin’ Joey Potter, she made it “cool” to whine :)

Ha! There’s no series that I hate more than Dawson’s Creek. Really.
