Carlos, interesting points...I think that I find someone or something more exceptional when the person doesn't over promote themselves. I agree that exceptional usually doesn't just happen and we have to work to make it happen, but I almost feel like our actions should speak for themselves. It seems like people have different definitions of exceptional. Elisa's example of Paris Hilton is a great one because she is the embodiment of someone whose PR team has worked wonders and made her "exceptional." Clearly a very thought provoking topic, well done!

Carlos I think you are talking more about charisma than exceptional. Many exceptional people are charismatic and so people flock to them. Other exceptional people are not charismatic and are more concerned with their work than peoples opinions of it. They are usually 'discovered' by some marketer or championed by someone charismatic.

I think Grace and Rebecca have an important point; to be perceived as exceptional takes marketing skills not exceptional work. The irony for me is that exceptional people are usually humble and are more interested in improving their work than improving the perception of their work.

Good marketing/promotion - Paris Hilton
Exceptional person - Not Paris Hilton

I agree so much with what you've said. Exceptional barely ever happens just because. Even folks who are stars in their given talents still have the common sense to continue honing their skills. They continue to grow, to offer new things, and always are innovating themselves. That is what makes them exceptional. That's what makes them stand apart from the people who just "lucked out."

Exceptional IS about personality - there is no doubt about it. But good PR and marketing skills can get you far - You don't necessarily have to be exceptional to market yourself as exceptional...if that makes any sense. But usually, those who are 'all show' - the ones that market themselves well but have nothing to back it up, usually get spotted, I'd rather focus on being exceptional and let my actions speak for themselves (of course a little PR never hurt anyone).

@Rebecca
@Grace

I don't think every good marketing/PR person is exceptional, even if it spreads. Fame and popularity, is not exceptional to me. But I do believe that exceptional people know how to market themselves.

Exceptional is not about skills. Exceptional is about personality. It's their character what will make them go far, wherever they are. And since they focus their efforts in what they're good at, and what they love, there's very little room for mistakes...

It's ok to be controversial. Some will be scared by ballsy, some will look for it. You can't please everyone.

Do you think that someone that isn't all those good things you said about her could have come up with that? Again, you can't fake it. It's not about telling us how awesome they are, it's about showing it with her words, design, ideas and charisma (which proves nothing).

I think self promotion or strong marketing like Rebecca talks about does spread. I was just thinking about this over the weekend, that there are so many exceptional people who are not recognized. Maybe it's because their causes isn't "hip" or maybe it's because they lack marketing skills, but internally have amazing life skills.

Eh. I think there's a big difference between being exceptional and being a good marketer/PR person. Which goes back to our good spreads convo I think. Good doesn't spread. Good marketing does.

That's why we see so many ridiculous celebrities, so many boring - but popular - bloggers, and more. Being exceptional isn't the same as having great marketing skills.
